The Gimmick

Dael Orlandersmith

Irish Premiere

Directed by Angus Farquhar

A solo performance for six characters

Charting the experience of a young girl growing up in Harlem in the 1960s during the civil rights movement, Orlander Smith's own alter ego, Alexis, is a girl with a passion to better herself and a talent for writing. Sensing a kindred spirit in fustrated artist Jimmy, the pair join forces and form a bond they hope will never be broken, yet will be with tragic inevitablilty.

Orlandersmith's writing for theatre is a unique fusion of traditional narrative, poetry and rap. Her incisive, amusing, abrasive and intense writing, building on her experiences growing up as an outsider in Harlem, have brought glowing critiques in America and Europe. She was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for her play Yellowman in 2002.
