First Thought Profile: How to Write a Book

Have you ever wanted to write a novel? How do you get it out and on the page? How do you handle structure, dialogue and plot? And once it’s written, what is the best way to get it published?

These and more questions are currently being discussed in a series of features in The Irish Times called How to Write a Book.

Sinéad Gleeson is a freelance journalist and regular radio and TV contributor. She writes for The Irish Times about music, books, the arts, popular culture, television and topical issues. She is a regular contributor to The View on RTÉ television and Arena, RTÉ Radio 1’s arts show and is a weekly contributor to The Last Word on Today FM. She has previously guest-presentedCultureshock and The Orla Barry Show on Newstalk. She also reviews books for The Sunday Business Post. She previously wrote a column for The Herald, and contributed to The Irish Daily Mail, The Irish Independent, U Magazine, Food & Wine Magazine, Village, Foggy Notions, Capital, RTÉ.ie, and various websites. She edited the online arts and politics magazine, Sigla, and co-founded the book site, Bibliofemme. She lives in Dublin.

Sinéad will chair an insightful discussion about all the processes behind writing a book. From imagination to publication, these discussions provide an opportunity to listen and learn from industry experts in the inspiring surroundings of NUI Galway's Aula Maxima. Guest authors include Mike McCormack, Alan McMonagle and Emer McBride winner of the recent Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction for her debut novel A Girl is a Half–formed Thing.
