Why the Moon Travels

devised by the ensemble from the book by Oein DeBhairduin
directed by Máiréad Ní Chróinín and Ionia Ní Chróinín

What do we lose when the old stories disappear, and what do we gain when they are told again?

Step into a space where modern Ireland meets an older Éire in a haunting and magical retelling of Irish Traveller folktales.

Devised with an all-Traveller ensemble from DeBhairduin’s best-selling book, Why the Moon Travels interweaves stories of kind animals, otherworldly beings, and hapless humans with memories and experiences from the performers’ own lives, mixing the wisdom of folklore with their own words.

Using oral storytelling, song, and evocative shadow puppetry, Why the Moon Travels celebrates the beauty of Irish Travellers’ nomadic heritage and gently examines the ways this heritage has been elided in the modern Irish state.

Developed with the support of Galway Culture Company and Galway International Arts Festival’s ELEVATE Bursary.
