Please Note: All new bookers, and existing ticketholders, will be required to show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination certificate at the venue. Any existing ticketholders who cannot provide a vaccine passport are asked to contact the GIAF box office on boxoffice@giaf.ie. Anyone who is no longer in a position to attend will receive a full refund.
These talks will be recorded and available to watch on this page and on Galway International Arts Festival's YouTube channel at a later date. All First Thought Talks will be available to listen to on GIAF's First Thought podcast later this year.
Backlisted, the popular UK–based book podcast, released its first episode in November 2015. Guests [usually writers] are asked to choose an old rather than new book to discuss, particularly ones that may have floated out of public consciousness. Co–hosted by author Andy Miller and publisher John Mitchinson [both former booksellers], its tone is erudite, warm and enthusiastic. It was awarded Book Podcast of the year in 2019 by The Bookseller, and in 2020 was singled out as one of the year’s best book podcasts by Oprah Winfrey. In July, Backlisted released its 144th episode and passed 2.5 million downloads.
Novelist Mary Costello will join Miller and Mitchinson to discuss Elizabeth Costello by J.M. Coetzee.
