Galway International Arts Festival picked up two of the six awards it was nominated for at The Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards at the National Concert Hall on Sunday evening.
The Landmark Productions and Galway International Arts Festival co-production Woyzeck in Winter, which premiered at the Galway International Arts Festival last year, was nominated in six categories, including Best Production.
Patrick O’Kane picked up the Best Actor award for his role as Woyzeck and for his role as Rothko in Prime Cut and Lyric Theatre’s coproduction of Red, by John Logan.
Rosaleen Linehan picked up the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Hurdy Gurdy Man in Woyzeck in Winter and for her role as Mags in the Gate Theatre production of The Red Shoes, in a new version by Nancy Harris.
Since they began in 1997, The Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards have celebrated the achievements of the Irish stage each year. Throughout the calendar, three independent judges visit professional productions across the country, reflecting on the highest standards of production, performance, direction and design.
After a critically-acclaimed run at the Galway International Arts Festival last July, Woyzeck in Winter wowed critics in London during its run at the Barbican Centre in September before going on to play Dublin Theatre Festival in October.
The Landmark Productions and Wide Open Opera coproduction, The Second Violinist, composed by Donnacha Dennehy with libretto by Enda Walsh, which premiered at the Galway International Arts Festival in 2017, won Best Opera.
Other Galway winners on the night included Druid theatre, with Marty Rea picking up the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Jemmy Maguire in Druid’s production of King of the Castle by Eugene McCabe and as Nick Carraway in the Gate Theatre production of The Great Gatsby.
