Ballyturk to play St Ann’s Warehouse in New York in January

14 September 2017

Landmark Productions and Galway International Arts Festival are delighted to announce that their production Ballyturk, written and directed by Tony Award winning playwright Enda Walsh, is set to play St. Ann’s Warehouse, New York from 9-28 January 2018.

The production, which premiered at GIAF to huge acclaim in 2014 and became the fastest selling show in the Festival’s history, earlier this year featured as part of the opening season at the Abbey Theatre. It made its UK premiere at the National Theatre of Great Britain in London, where it was included in The Guardian’s Top 10 Theatre Shows of the Year and received multiple award nominations. It was awarded both Best Sound and Best Production at the Irish Times Theatre Awards in 2015.

Speaking from London, Enda Walsh commented, “It's hard to know where the ridiculous lunacy and heartache of Ballyturk came from, but I'm so glad I was there to see it come alive. Its singular world is a wonderful place to return to. I'm especially delighted to be back in New York and the beautiful St. Ann's Warehouse theatre. Oh it'll be fun!”

This new production of Ballyturk is a Landmark Productions and Galway International Arts Festival co-production in association with the Abbey Theatre. It stars Olwen Fouéré, Mikel Murfi and Tadhg Murphy.

The world-class creative team for Ballyturk includes set and costume design by Jamie Vartan, lighting design by Adam Silverman, sound design by Helen Atkinson with original music composed by Teho Teardo.

Galway International Arts Festival CEO John Crumlish commented: "Next year will be an important year for Galway International Arts Festival and I can think of no better way of starting it than with this great piece at this great theatre in New York."

Galway International Arts Festival’s Artistic Director Paul Fahy said: “We are thrilled to return to New York with Ballyturk and to begin a new year on tour with our wonderful co-producers Landmark Productions. Susan Feldman and St. Ann’s Warehouse have been hugely supportive of Enda’s work over the years and we are very excited for this production to have its US premiere at St. Ann’s Warehouse following on from Misterman and Arlington.”

Speaking from New York, Artistic Director of St. Ann's Warehouse, Susan Feldman added, "We are so pleased to welcome Enda Walsh's Ballyturk to St. Ann's Warehouse this January, along with the brilliant Irish actors Mikel Murfi, Olwen Fouéré and the lovable Tadhg Murphy. It's a dream cast in another mythical setting of Enda Walsh's imaginative invention. Lots of madcap and hi jinx in this Walsh outing."

St. Ann’s Warehouse launched its international 2017-18 Season this morning in New York, the third in its ‘stunning’ (New York Magazine) waterfront theater in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Among the highlights of St. Ann’s Season is the National Theatre of Great Britain and Headlong’s production of Duncan Macmillan’s West End Hit People, Places & Things, starring Irish actor Denise Gough, who received an Olivier Award for her performance; the Schaubühne's production of Returning to Reims directed by Thomas Ostermeier starring Homeland’s Nina Hoss; Rufus Wainwright’s Northern Stars – a tribute concert to iconic Canadian songwriters; and Nikos Karathanos’ fantastical vision of Aristophanes’ The Birds, from the Onassis Cultural Centre, Athens.

Ballyturk will run at the St. Ann’s Warehouse from 9-28 January 2018.

Galway International Arts Festival would like to acknowledge the support of its principal funding agencies the Arts Council and Fáilte Ireland and Festival Partners Ulster Bank and NUI Galway.
