One of the hit shows at last years Galway International Arts Festival, riverrun, featuring acclaimed theatre artist Olwen Fouéré, opened this weekend at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Produced by TheEmergencyRoom and Galway International Arts Festival, in association with Cusack Projects Limited, riverrun has enjoyed national and international acclaim since it premiered at the Festival in July 2013.
The Stage, Britain's leading weekly theatre and entertainment industry newspaper, have awarded Fouéré a Stage Award for Acting Excellence. Theatre critic Nick Awde from The Stage presented the Award at a reception this afternoon at the Traverse Theatre.
Speaking from Edinburgh Olwen Fouéré said, ‘I am delighted to receive this generous acknowledgement from The Stage. It has been a great pleasure to bring riverrun to audiences from Galway to London and now Edinburgh, and experience how they are carried by the magic of Finnegans Wake and Joyce’s unique language. Myself and all the artists involved and our co-producers are very proud of the work and of how it resonates with audiences. The show is an act of extraordinary trust and, more than anything else I have done, ‘it’ has led the way. We felt all along that riverrun is a powerful and life affirming piece and we are very happy that it has been so warmly received by the Traverse Theatre, the Festival and Edinburgh’s audiences. We are very grateful to Culture Ireland for their support with this project and we know it still has a long life ahead.’
riverrun, adapted by Fouéré from the final section of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, also enjoyed a critically successful run at the Dublin Theatre Festival and most recently at the National Theatre of Great Britain in March this year. Following it run at Edinburgh riverrun will tour to the prestigious Next Wave Festival at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) in New York and to Princeton University in September.
riverrun runs at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh until 24 August and tours to BAM in New York from 1-20 September and to Princeton University on 25 & 25 September.
