Galway Region of Gastronomy 2018

For the year of 2018, the city and county of Galway in the West of Ireland has the honour of being the first ever European Region of Gastronomy in Ireland — one of only two places to receive the designation for 2018, the other one being Noord Brabant in the Netherlands.

The illustrious Galway, West of Ireland European Region of Gastronomy designation is being brought to life with a wide-ranging and vibrant programme of events, festivals, projects and initiatives that focus attention on the area’s first-class local food producers, outstanding restaurant landscape, its reputation as Ireland’s festival capital, as well as its renowned landscape, heritage, culture and hospitality.

The designation provides a European platform to not only showcase Galway, West of Ireland and its wonderful food produce, but also provides an opportunity to welcome European food tourists to the region to sample its fine fayre.

At European level the ERoG designation is managed by IGCAT, the Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism. Europe now has a number of regions of gastronomy all working together to improve the quality of people lives in regions spanning from the west coast of Ireland to Riga in Latvia.

The Galway, West of Ireland ERoG 2018 designation is being led by Galway County Council, Galway City Council, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology and Teagasc, and it is being supported by a range of both national and local stakeholders and communities. The Galway Region of Gastronomy will have a presence in the GIAF Festival Garden in 2018.
