Galway International Arts Festival and Róisín Dubh are delighted to announce that The Stunning will brew up a storm at the Galway International Arts Festival this July.
The legendary live performers, who have amassed a cult following nationally and internationally with hits such as Got to Get Away, Half Past Two, Romeo’s on Fire, Tightrope Walker, To the Bright and Shining Sun, Everything That Rises and Brewing up a Storm, will return to Festival for the first time in over a decade to play the Festival Big Top on Sunday 22 July.
The Stunning formed in 1987 in Galway and had their first Top 20 single just a year later, followed by two more Top 10 hits before their debut album Paradise in the Picturehouse hit the number one spot in 1990, staying there for 5 weeks.
The band, now a household name, provided the soundtrack to a generation of people brought up in Ireland during the 80s and 90s.
Four more hit singles and another Number 1 album followed and the band released a live album in 1993 before splitting up a year later.
After an absence of almost ten years, during which Joe and Steve Wall went on to form the successful outfit The Walls, the band reformed for an 18-date tour, which turned out to be one of the highest grossing tours in Ireland of 2003.
A whopping 30,000 people turned out to see them play during the Volvo Ocean Race in Galway in 2012, a testament to the timeless quality of their music.
And more was to come: in May 2017 they released a brand new single Brighten Up My Life, which has received over 1,000 plays on Irish radio to date. Another new single Always You was released in November of the same year, the day before their first sell-out London show in 23 years.
Twice Around the World, a re-recorded, re-imagined version of their number one album Once Around the World - which also includes the new singles - is due for release in March 2018, with a nationwide tour kicking off the same day.
With the distinctive vocal sounds and bass rhythms of brothers Steve and Joe Wall, Derek Murray on guitar, Jimmy Higgins on brass and keyboards and Cormac Dunne on drums, The Stunning have always been one Ireland’s best live band and have performed to legions of fans at home and in the UK, Australia and the US. The Stunning have also supported artists like U2, Bob Dylan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers along the way.
Their live album Tightrope was recorded over two nights at their now legendary Galway Arts Festival 1993 concerts.
The Stunning will be joined on the bill by Ireland’s newest indie-rock sensation, The Academic.
With hits such as Different, Mixtape 2003, Bear Claws, Permanent Vacation, and Why Can't We Be Friends?, The Academic have emerged as one of the most exciting live acts on the music scene.
From playing a 'Battle of The Bands' competition at their local school, bandmates Craig Fitzgerald, Dean Gavin and brothers Matt and Stephen Murtagh have emerged as one of the most exciting music acts, with an already impressive live resume, which includes a long list of sold out headline shows, appearances at some of Europe’s most high profile festivals as well as opening slots for acts like Twenty One Pilots, The Strokes, and Catfish and the Bottlemen.
The Academic have amassed millions of streams online and have also had widespread international radio play, including support from BBC Radio 1 in the UK (Annie Mac, Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart).
