Visual Arts Internship Programme
The Galway International Arts Festival (GIAF) Visual Arts Internship Programme (VAIP) was created to give those interested in visual arts – from artists to aspiring cultural managers, art students to general enthusiasts – the opportunity to go behind the scenes of GIAF’s visual arts programme, learning and building the skills and networks necessary for success in the sector.
In 2017, 23 interns invigilated GIAF’s main Festival Gallery, which featured the work of internationally-renowned artists David Mach, Sarah Hickson and Jennifer Cunningham.
Interns participated in training workshops on the artwork and visitor engagement techniques, professional development seminars and exclusive artist talks before becoming the Festival’s core invigilation team for tens of thousands of visitors over two weeks.

Interested interns also help facilitate Children’s Craft Times and participate in special events, such as the GIAF Visual Arts Launch. All interns receive official t-shirts, complimentary tickets to select Festival shows, discounts at local businesses, an invitation to the Festival wrap party and certificates co-signed by GIAF Education Partner NUI Galway.

"This is one of the most unbelievably fabulous experiences I've ever had! An incredible atmosphere of care and love was created. It was a big honour and pleasure to be a part of this, with motivated people who care about their job and their team… This already has led to changes in my life, and it will have long-lasting effects. "
