Druid Debuts 2017

It’s not theatre until someone’s watching.

Druid Debuts staged readings offer the chance to experience work fresh off the page and to share an open discussion with writer and cast.

They are a chance to see and shape something new and daring. Many readings have gone on to full productions including last year’s Helen and I by Meadhbh McHugh [Druid Debut 2014]. You never know what you’ll see.

Druid Debut - Furniture 28 July

Furniture by Sonya Kelly looks at how possessions can shape our worldview and even ourselves. In an age of rampant consumerism, is it easier to purchase symbols of identity rather than cultivate our own? Told through the lives of six individuals, Furniture is a humorous, insightful, touching and often philosophical look at who we are and how we'd like to be perceived.

'Furniture is not sentimental. You can love it, but it won't remember who you are.'

Druid Debut - Bir Tawil 21 July (sold out)

Rory is a literary agent struggling with his sexuality, his dreary job, his mother’s oncoming dementia and his father's inability to care for her. He dreams of escape and when he meets venerable author Bríd and free-spirited Piotr, he can see a glimmer of possibility, but the waves of doubt, depression and fear are almost overwhelming. He’s drowning and needs saving.

Bir Tawil is a new Irish play about the human need for stories; that their value, and the value of all art, is not simply monetary but essential to the human experience.
