Mental illness continues to take its toll on Irish people as we move from the highly populated mental hospitals [lunatic asylums as they were called in the 19th century], of the past to a place where treatments are better but facilities are scarce.
Professor Brendan Kelly, psychiatrist and author of the definitive history of mental illness treatment in Ireland, Hearing Voices: The History of Psychiatry in Ireland, will talk about his research into Irish mental health.
Chair: Alice Mauger, the author of The Cost of Insanity in Nineteenth–Century Ireland: Public, Voluntary and Private Asylum Care.
