Everyone wants to be part of Extraordinary, and perhaps in no year has this been more true than Galway International Arts Festival (GIAF) 2018.
With 620 registered volunteers, plus almost 400 more participating in the democratic spectacle The People Build, over 1,000 total volunteers helped transform Galway City into a world-renown arts mecca this July – a Festival record!
Volunteers came from all around the world – 46 countries to be exact – and represented all age groups and abilities. These dedicated individuals used their knowledge and skills to help carry out events across the Festival programme, including in music, theatre, visual arts, First Thought Talks, street spectacle, comedy and behind the scenes.
A select group of students, arts practitioners and enthusiasts also participated in the Festival’s inaugural Visual Arts Internship Programme. These interns acted as invigilators for Festival Gallery visitors and enjoyed exclusive artist talks, professional development training and special events.
GIAF18 also saw the first Star Volunteer Award presented to Jerry Caldwell for his outstanding contribution to the volunteer team. Awards were also presented to volunteers Richard Hawkins, Julie Benson and John Byrnes.
Thank you to all GIAF volunteers who made this year, and who indeed make every year, such a success. Congratulations on your achievement, and we will see you at GIAF2019!
